Tattoo Aftercare
What you need to know
Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring your new tattoo heals well and looks its best. Follow these step-by-step instructions:
1. INITIAL BANDAGE
Keep the bandage on:
Your tattoo artist will apply a bandage or cling film. Keep this on for at least 2-4 hours, or as advised by your artist.
Avoid touching:
Do not touch the tattoo or the bandage with unwashed hands to prevent infection.
2. FIRST CLEANING
Wash your hands:
Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Remove the bandage:
Gently remove the bandage after the recommended time.
Clean the tattoo:
Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your hands, not a cloth or sponge, to avoid irritation.
3. DRYING
Pat dry:
Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry. Avoid rubbing as it can irritate the skin.
4. MOISTURIZING
Apply ointment:
Once dry, apply a thin layer of a tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free moisturizer recommended by your artist. Do this 2-3 times a day for the first few days.
Avoid over-moisturizing:
Too much ointment can suffocate the skin and delay healing.
5. HYGIENE AND CARE
Avoid soaking:
For the first 2-3 weeks, avoid swimming, hot tubs, and long showers to prevent the tattoo from soaking.
Wear loose clothing:
Choose loose-fitting clothes that won’t rub against the tattoo to avoid irritation and promote airflow.
Do not scratch or pick:
As the tattoo heals, it will start to scab and peel. Do not scratch or pick at the scabs as it can lead to infection and affect the final appearance.
6. PROTECTION
Avoid direct sunlight:
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight during the healing process, as UV rays can fade the colors.
Use sunscreen:
After the tattoo has healed, always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when exposing it to the sun to maintain the vibrancy of the colors.
7. MONITORING
Watch for signs of infection:
Redness, excessive swelling, pus, or intense pain may indicate an infection. If you notice any of these signs, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
Consult your artist:
If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out to your tattoo artist for advice.
8. LONG TERM CARE
Moisturize regularly:
Keep the skin moisturized to maintain the tattoo’s appearance.
Sun protection:
Continue using sunscreen on the tattooed area to prevent fading.
Following these steps will help ensure that your tattoo heals properly and looks great for years to come.
